MG Aile Strike Gundam WIP Part 1

So as I mentioned on Twitter a while back, my next Gunpla project is…MG Aile Strike Gundam!

Bit of background on this; this kit came out in 2003, and you could say it’s the forefather of all V2.0 kits, being the first kit with a full internal frame, and double jointed feet. With Gundam SEED being the first anime Gundam I watched, this kit is pretty special to me and I’ve held onto it for almost 7 years now, waiting until the day I’d be experienced enough to do it justice.

Well now that the Strike ver.RM is out, I figured there’s no point holding onto this kit any longer. Today I’ll be working on the white parts:

Despite being state-of-the-art 10 years ago, this kit does have some glaring problems already – there are quite a few details which aren’t moulded in the right colour.

The head vulcans and the vents on the back of the head should be grey.

Also these vents on the back skirt should be red and black. Anyway these should be able to be solved by alot of masking, there are far worse painting problems that I’ll get to in a later WIP.

In my previous WIPs for Strike Freedom, Wing Zero Custom and God Gundam, I usually do a black base for preshading white. However, starting preshading from a black base is extremely time consuming, since I do black, followed by white + blue, followed by pure white. This time, I’m going to try preshade from a greyish base instead, cutting the black step out.

In the picture above, I’ve painted the base coat a bluish-grey colour, using White + Intermediate Blue.

After the blue-grey base coat, pure white is applied. Total time, well about 3 hours :O

So I guess the answer is yes, you can achieve nice white preshading without using black for a base coat 🙂
