Developer Uber Entertainment has recently announced a PC release for Monday Night Combat via Steam, scheduled to release on January 17 next year. For those who pre-purchase the game now, you will get access to the beta which starts in two days’ time on Thursday.
About Monday Night Combat
In essence, it is a third person multiplayer online battle arena shooter. Avatars are class-based and have a cartoony-style art direction, in similar vein to Team Fortress 2. The game objectives mostly revolves around a stationary Moneyball where it needs to be either attacked or defended depending on the two game scenarios Crossfire and Blitz, the latter being more of a Horde mode. Although it is mentioned above that this is a multiplayer game, Blitz has the option of playing solo.
For the Steam PC version, the developers are promising the added features of dedicated server support and an upcoming mod support in January (although it is noteworthy that editor support could be translated to mean merely map editing only). Controller support is also provided for those who have preferences and last but not least, Steam Achievements, Leaderboards, and Stats are listed on the page, which means it will be safe to assume that it incorporates Steamworks.
Author’s Notes
The premise of DotA elements in a third person shooter should be naturally enticing to MOBA players, and an extra for those who prefer third person shooters rather than first. The fact that this version of the game has dedicated server support as well as editing (mod?) and all of Steam’s bells and whistle would probably make it to be a better experience in contrast to its Xbox brethren, though those who dislike Steam’s DRM might feel otherwise.
Nonetheless, the game is currently only priced at 13.5 USD/8 GBP after its 10% pre-order discount, which gives it rather good value. Personally, I feel that we won’t be seeing any further Steam sale for the game until Easter at best, and even then the sale will probably be at 33-50% so that’s really not too much taken off the pre-order price. In any case, there are worse things you could do with a tenner!
