36 Leeds Street, Footscray
So we felt like being lazy on a Saturday afternoon, and decided to order something to be delivered to us. Having received Kitchen Samrat’s menus in the mail several times, we decided to give them a go.
We ordered 3 curries which came to us, by a friendly delivery guy, in just under 40 minutes. What I liked about them was that each curry came with a choice of two naans or a serve of rice for free. You can even upgrade your plain naan to a garlic or butter variety for an additional 50 cents. So this is what we got for a total of 27 dollars.
Lamb Vindaloo
I have not found a vindaloo rivaling that of Rich Maha (Vermont/Melbourne CBD) – this one was no exception. It was delightfully spicy but was slightly lacking in taste. The addition of red peppers was a really nice twist to the dish though.
Butter Chicken
Not the best I’ve tasted, but passable. I liked how they used chicken breast instead of other cuts of chicken, and each piece looked pretty well cleaned without any pieces of fat. It did however come with a good meat/curry ratio, which is quite unusual for most Indian restaurants.
Palak Paneer
Don’t let the poo consistency fool you. This dish may look quite unappetizing, but is anything but. Made from Indian cottage cheese, onions, and spinach, it tasted quite nice and provided a nice soothing contrast to the spicy Lamb Vindaloo. I still found Flora’s version much tastier, but I suspect it would have been because Kitchen Samrat’s cheese was served cubed, as opposed to Flora’s cheese which was broken in many pieces and therefore melting into the curry itself.
All in all, it was a pretty good feed for under 30 dollars. I wouldn’t say they are the best around for North Indian food, but they certainly do decent food for really good prices!
